Australia Day – Celebrations in Perth

Australia Perth
Posted: January 23, 2012

This year is my first Australia Day and I will be spending it in Perth, WA.  As I had not spent Australia Day Down Under before, I decided to find out a bit more about it.

It was previously known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and ANA Day.  It is a national holiday in Australia and has been since 1994.  Australia day is celebrated every year on 26th of January and commemorates the arrival of the first fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788.

What happens on Australian Day?

In Canberra on Australia Day Eve the presentation of the Australia of the Year of Awards takes place. Winners are those who are a significant role model and have made a significant contribution to the Australian community. There are also community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies. One of the most famous is the Big Day Out and the Triple J Hottest 100.

What is happening in Perth on Australia Day?

Perth will also have its citizen ceremonies which will take place around the banks of the Swan River.  There will be the Celebration Zone in South Perth, the Survival indigenous concert in the Supreme Court Gardens, youth activities on Langley Park and the high energy Air BP Air and Water Show on and above Perth Water.

I love picnics in the park and there will be BYO Picnic Zones on the Esplanade Reserve and Kings Park.  However between 6.30pm and 8.45pm alcohol will be limited in these two areas.

What are you doing on Australia Day?  I am going to the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club for the Havaianas Thong Competition from 10 – 1pm.  Then going a friend’s house who has a pool.  It is going to 39 degrees Celsius !! I will also watch the fireworks later on.
