Discovering Australia’s South West

This past weekend, I visited Australia’s “south west” which is the area south of Perth down to Albany and east to Bremer Bay. There was a festival on called Southbound down in Busselton which I went to for the full weekend last year.  This year, I only went for the day, it was still fun, but rather pricey at $135 a ticket even if you just arrive in the evening. Here are a few places I recommend visiting next time you head down south.

Southbound

Busselton

This weekend, I spent a night in Busselton which is a few kms north of Yallingup. Busselton is home to the Southbound festival and also to the world’s longest timber jetty in the southern hemisphere. There is a little train to the end of the jetty to see the underwater observatory at a cost of $29 per adult.  To walk down the jetty it is $2.50.

Eagle Bay

Before Christmas we visited Wise Vineyards in Eagle Bay.  This time my sister and I went to Eagle Bay Olives, a family-owned olive grove and we were able to taste the home grown olives and olive oil, delicious. The farm shop is open for tastings 10:30 – 5:00 Friday to Sunday and Monday public holidays. The shop sells all its own produce as well as Provencale table cloths, locally made ice cream and other locally hand crafted products. It reminded me of Provence. The olive oil in Margaret River is seen as some of the best in Australia.

Dunsborough

When I was in Yallingup for the weekend last month, I went to Dunsborough for the morning. There is a great yogo studio in town which is also connected to an organic restaurant serving delicious foods. Dunsborough also has a number of small shops and is famous to the Dunsborough Bakery.

Yoga

I just started exploring Australia’s south west, a short drive from Perth. I would really like to discover Albany and Denmark but I need about a week to visit these two towns on the south coast.
