Running the Sydney Harbour 10K

Australia Sydney
Posted: July 6, 2013

Next Sunday will be the first time I am running a 10k in Sydney.  I have previously run many 10Ks but these were all in the UK.  This is only the second time the  Sydney Harbour race is taking place but it is the first time Australian Insurance company, Real Insurance is sponsoring the run.

Sydney is a very hilly city, but this run has a flat course.  It starts and finishes in the Rocks area.  The course goes around Hickson road, Cockle By, Darling Harbour and Barangaroom. First Fleet park (right by the museum of Contemporary Art) will be where the runners gather after the race and also where the spectators will be waiting to greet them.   The race is great training for the City 2 Surf that takes place next month both in Sydney and in Perth.  I am hoping to get round the track in less than one hour.

If you have been thinking of getting fit for summer, now is the time.  The entries for the Real Insurance race are open until the race day, so there is no excuse.  There will be the registration tent in First Fleet Park from Friday the 12th of July.  Hopefully with the rain gone, it will be sunny on the 14th which makes it even better to enjoy the views of Sydney.

I will be raising money for Red Kite, a charity that helps young children who have cancer and their families to get through these difficult times. Many people take their health for granted and I am always grateful for it.  If you have your health, you have everything.  Therefore I want to be able to do as much as I can while I am fit and able to do so and have set up a fundraising page.

For those taking part in the race, allow enough time to get to the race as the Circle Line is not running on Sunday the 14th.  The Circle line goes from Town Hall to Circular Quay and all the way to the beach.  Buses will be replacing trains but give yourselves extra time as there will be delays. There will be some car parks open, but many do not open until 8:00am.  The race begins at 7:30am.

I am really looking forward to running my first 10k race.  I have found some great training tips from Lee Troop who is a marathon runner.  I do not think I have what it takes to run as fast as him, but  if I can get round the track in less than 1 hour, I will be happy.  I have a 20km race to run next month in City2Surf with my sister, so  I have to make good time and also try and beat her, there is always a little sibling rivalry.
