Starting a Job in Sydney

Australia Sydney
Posted: February 6, 2013

Opera HouseYou have made the big step to move to another country, you have sorted out a place to stay, now all you need is a job.  There area many opportunities in Sydney, the Australian economy is booming, unemployment is 5% and minimum wage is high. Here are few places where you can start looking for a job:

1) Tweet

Start tweeting that you are now in Sydney and looking for the next step. There are always recruiters tweeting out new jobs and they are also on the look out for new candidates.  So don’t be shy, tweet you are looking for a challenging opportunity (not one where you are working too many hours though). You still want to have a good work/life balance.

2) Google It

If in doubt, go straight to Google, to help you find a job.  If you know the field you want to go into, then look for the companies in Sydney and contact them direct.  This way you avoid the recruiter fees and it also shows you are proactive in the look out for a job.

3) Recruiters

I don’t agree that all recruiters are bad or they never help you get a job.  Quite the contrary, I worked with StoneCarter and they helped secure me a job in London before I went to Australia which was great. If you do not know the market, it is best to set up an appointment with one of the recruiters in your field. This way you can put a face to the email and with them receiving hundreds of emails, you will help your chances of standing out and being remembered.

4) Networking Events

I run a networking group where many people in my profession come to learn more about the latest news in their industry. It is also a great place to meet others and find out about jobs/vacancies.  Sometimes it is not necessarily what you know, but who you know that helps land you a job.

5) Linkedin

I used Linkedin a lot to share news but when I was looking for a job I used it to search for new opportunities.  I would definitely recommend it as one of the tools to help look for jobs. Linkedin allows you to filter by organisation, location and industry, making it much easier to search for that dream job.

Coming from experience, it can be difficult and time consuming to find a job in Sydney.  A lot of the recruiters do not work at the same pace as you may find in London as there is a lot of skilled workers in Sydney so the recruiters have a lot of choice. They may not be as quick as coming back to you, but don’t give up, you will find that perfect opportunity and enjoy spending time Down Under.
