Weekend in Yallingup, Western Australia

Australia Margaret River
Posted: December 28, 2012

When I arrived in Perth earlier this month, we headed “down south” to Yallingup which is just 40km north of the Margaret River wine region. Yallingup is famous for its surf, caves and of course its proximity to some of the best vineyards in Australia.  Here are 5 recommended activities I suggest you do next time you are in Yallingup:

Surf

Yallingup is a popular surfers’ destination.  Smiths,  Injidup and Three Bears are some of the most well known.  There are many surf shops offering lessons, but if you are going with a few surf friends, take your board, wetsuit, along with some patience and aks them to help you catch the waves.

Yallingup Beach

Yallingup Beach

Yallingup Beach is one of the most popular beaches to visit.  With its sheltered lagoon, it is safe for families to swim and with the rock pools is a great place to snorkle and see the wildlife. There are many houses for rent within close proximity to Yallingup Beach.

Wine Tasting

We went to Wise vineyard, along Eagle Bay Road for lunch.  It is a beautiful setting with views overlooking Eagle Bay. It is free to go to the “cellar door” and the prices of the bottles start around $20.  There can be discounts on cases of 6 bottles or more, but this is subject to the cellar door.

Wise Wine

Margaret River

Yallingup sits at the top of Cave’s Road which is the backbone of the Margaret River wine region. Margaret River wine is one of the most sought after wines in Australia, best Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are many vineyards to visit in the region. For those who are after an adventure, canoe down the Margaret River, go off road exploring in the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park  or drive through the Boranup Forest.

Caves

Yallingup is famous for its caves, particularly the Ngligi Cave, 5 minute drive from Yallingup or 10 – 15 minute walk from Seashells Caves House. It was first discovered in 1899, originally named Yallingup Cave and has many stalactite and salagmite formations to admire. There are semi guided tours where you can learn about the history of the cave. Bring the family, there is a BBQ area and cafe as well as a playgroud, making it a great day out.

Yallingup is a beautiful part of Western Australia to visit. It is only 2.5 hours drive south of Perth.  Spend a weekend in Yallingup, learn to surf and taste some delicious wine.
