Sydney for less than $500

Australia Sydney

I went to Sydney for 3 days and 2 nights.  A lot of people in Perth, Australia said it would be expensive to fly over there and stay in Sydney.  However, there are ways to visit Sydney without it breaking the bank. Here are some of my tips.

Happy Hour

I bought my tickets with Virgin Airlines during “happy hour”.  This means they were $169 return. Not bad considering it can be up to $500 one way. Next time you are thinking of going to Sydney, check on line for the best deals, the Flight Centre and other holiday companies are always more expensive than the prices on the internet.

While you are in Sydney, there are some bars that also offer Happy Hour off their price of drink and food. However, the cheapest place I found to have a decent meal and a drink was the RSL. This stands for Returned and Services League which is a support organisation for men and women who have served in the defence league. There are many RSLs all throughout the country and they encourage you to become a member if you come more than once.

Hostels

There are so many hostels to choose from in Sydney.  I stayed in a backpackers near Central station called “Wake Up” for $98 a night.  That is a private room for two, which works out at just under $50 each. There are two other backpackers right by Central station, the Railway YHA and Central YHA.

Family

If you have family living in Perth and who do not mind driving you to the airport and picking you up, you can save yourself $110 in cab fares. Perth has not got round to getting a train line sorted to the airports so you need to either drive, get someone to drive you or get a cab.

Eating Out

Sydney is much cheaper than Perth to eat out and drink.  If you go to the local RSL club, you can get subsidised food and drink.  I went to the one in Bondi and meals were about $15 each and you had an amazing view of Bondi beach.  The restaurant below the RSL is an Italian and 3 – 4 times the price.

Sight seeing

There are lots of tourist attractions to see in Sydney and it doesn’t cost a thing.  Walk around the Botanical gardens and visit the pool in the harbour.  It costs $5.50 to swim in the 50m pool and you can grab a coffee or bite to eat after.

Next time you are thinking of heading to Sydney, but hesitant due to the costs, remember it does not have to cost a lot if you follow these tips.
