If you are in Perth, you have to head down to Margaret River, located about 350 kms south from Perth, which takes about 3.5 hours. I had never been there to Margaret River and would definitely recommend making a trip down there if you are in WA. Here some of the places we visited.
1) Visit the Chocolate Factory
We went to the Margaret River Chocolate Company, which had been advertised as a factory. It is more of a shop with a window where you can see the chocolate being made. But you can also get help yourself to button chocolate – milk, white and dark.
2) Have a BBQ
We had plenty of bbqs at Margaret River. We stayed at the Margaret River Tourist Park which was right by the city centre. We stopped off at Coles to get our BBQ food and used one of the bbqs at the park to prepare our dinner.
3) Visit a Winery
We went to Hay Shed Hill Windery which is just off Tom Cullity drive which is off Caves Road. It was a nice winery and delicious food. Unfortunately all the outdoor area had been reserved, so we sat inside, but it was still a good place to stop off for lunch.
4) Head to the Beach
There are lots of beaches to go to in Margaret River. The water is a lot colder than in Perth, but the waves tend to be bigger. We went to four beaches when we were down there, Gracetown beach on the Friday Moses Rock and Redgate beach on the Saturday and then the beach by the River mouth the next day.
5) Go out in the town
Margaret River is small town so if you want dinner in one of their restaurants, make sure you get there well before last orders which is 8:30. They have a cafe called Cafe 131 which server delicious pancake breakfasts and coffee. There are two pubs in the town and we went there to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Everyone is really friendly and there was a lively atmosphere.
It was a great weekend down south, if you are in Perth for more than a week, I would definitely recommend heading to Margaret River.
