How Much Does It Cost To See Europe?

Europe
Posted: July 23, 2012

How long is a piece of string?  Europe can cost you as little or as much as you like. I have just completed a 31 day tour of Europe and I budgeted £100 a day.  I kept within that on average.

Here is how you can visit Europe for £100 a day.

Total amount for 31 days

£3,100

£100 a day also includes:

flights, accommodation, train passes, food and drink and tours in some cities.

RailEurope

I took the interrail pass which allowed me 10 journeys within 22 days.  In the end I did not use it all as I took a boat instead of a train (from Bratislava to Vienna), but it was worth taking the train instead of planes as you only need to turn up aroun 10 minutes before your train is due to depart.  If you can, purchase the raileurope pass from the office on Piccadilly, that way you avoid the delivery charge of £7.00.

Prague

Flights

EasyJet offer cheap flights throughout Europe anytime of the year.  I flew into Berlin and out of Rome and the flights cost around £100 each.  If you go to Europe during the off peak season and you book your flights well in advance, it will work out cheaper. EasyJet only allows 20kgs for baggage allowance otherwise they will charge you an extortionate amount.

Hostels, Apartments or Hotels

Normally when I travel, I stay in hostels. But sometimes you can get really good deals on apartments and on some hotels.  When travelling with friends, it can work out cheaper as you are sharing the cost of the room with others. Private rooms cost more than dorms, but if you want that extra privacy, you have to pay for it.

Some of the best accommodation deals in Europe I am across was in Berlin and Budapest.

Berlin

East Seven Berlin Hostel – £24 per person per night for two single beds. The hostel had a great spacious room, nice communal area and the price also included breakfast. The staff were also very friendly and suggested walking tours to embark on.

East Berlin Hostel

The hostel is located in the former East Germany at the following address:
Ammon & Schöpfel GbR
Schwedt Str. 7
10119
Berlin

Budapest

The Marriott Budapest – £96 per room for a double deluxe view of river room. The price also included all you can eat breakfast and a lot of choice including American pancakes, eggs cooked while you watched, cereals, cheese, ham and various bread.

Mariott Hotel

The Mariott is located in central Budapest, right on the river at the following address:

Apaczai Csere Janos Utca 4,
V. district
Budapest

Walking Tours

I would recommend taking the walking tours as the most economical way to see your destination.  There are the hop on and hop off buses, but I did not think they were as good as in London and I did not learn half as much as I did from the walking tours.

If you are planning on doing a tour round Europe, I would suggest go in spring and early summer (avoid July and August) or go in early autumn, September and October.  Contact me on Twitter if you are planning your trip and would like some additional advice.
